Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

Nestled in the heart of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, New Hampshire, the Kirkwood Gardens stand as a vibrant living testament to the region's natural beauty and biodiversity. Curated gardens cover nearly three acres, offering a unique blend of horticultural splendor and ecological education.

Beyond their aesthetic charm, Kirkwood Gardens serve a vital educational role within the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Interpretive signage and exhibits dotted throughout the gardens provide valuable insights into the local ecosystems, highlighting the importance of native plants and their role in supporting wildlife.

In the summer of 2023, the center transformed an overgrown section of the garden, previously choked with invasive plants and tree stumps, into a vibrant pollinator garden. This new area was landscaped with plants specifically chosen to attract butterflies and other pollinators. Informative signs were also installed to share details about the garden and the fascinating pollinator species it draws. The garden boasts a standout feature of three impressive butterfly panels. These aren't just beautiful pieces of art; they also showcase the food and brood plants of each butterfly. Local artist Jenn Houle created these stunning images, which were then turned into printable designs, expertly produced by iZone using CHPL panels. Positioned strategically, these panels also encourage visitors to step forward and capture memorable photos. This revitalized garden now not only adds beauty to our surroundings but also actively supports the local pollinator population, all while providing an engaging and picturesque experience for our visitors.

The production time even exceeded our expectations, with the panels arriving in time for a special dedication event in September 2023.
