Sculpture Interpretations of Wandell Sculputure Garden

Meadowbrook Park in Urbana, a cherished community destination, is home to the Wandell Sculpture Garden, where visitors can wander through a diverse collection of sculptures created by artists from across the country. Each installation is accompanied by an interpretation panel that shares the artwork’s title, creation date, and artist background, offering visitors a richer, more meaningful connection to each piece.

Over time, the original interpretation panels began to show the effects of constant exposure to the elements. Recognizing the need for a durable alternative, the Urbana Park District conducted extensive research and ultimately selected Custom High-Pressure Laminate (CHPL) for its longevity and resilience. This transition ensured that the panels would remain vibrant, legible, and weather-resistant well into the future.

The successful renewal of the sculpture garden’s interpretive displays grew from a collaborative effort among several dedicated partners. Urbana Park District staff redesigned each panel layout to be visually appealing and easy to read. Ratio Architects contributed by creating the weathered steel stands that support and frame the panels with a modern, durable presence. iZone Imaging manufactured the CHPL panels and the steel standards, ensuring both exceptional quality and long-term performance in an outdoor setting. Through this teamwork, the partners delivered a museum-quality installation that enhances the garden while requiring minimal upkeep.

By upgrading the sculptures’ interpretive panels and mounting them on robust steel stands, Meadowbrook Park continues to offer visitors an engaging and educational art experience. These enhancements reflect the Urbana Park District’s ongoing commitment to protecting and elevating public art while celebrating the natural beauty of the park.
