Case Study | Playful Learning Landscapes

Playful Learning Landscapes is a national movement dedicated to reimagining everyday spaces as opportunities for meaningful, interactive learning. By adding playful, educational elements to places where families naturally gather, the initiative helps spark curiosity, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, and foster a sense of community pride.

This mission comes to life in a recent installation in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. Created by artist Chad Tyler in collaboration with the Chicago Children’s Museum and Metropolitan Family Services and generously supported by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and CME Group Foundation the installation is designed to nurture social-emotional development among young children and their caregivers. Through engaging, conversation-starting elements, the space invites families to explore and express emotions together in a thoughtful, welcoming environment.

Developed in partnership with Chicago Public Schools and Gary Elementary and informed by community input, the installation was carefully integrated into a well loved public space. Though on a school campus, the area functions as a true neighborhood gathering spot, hosting everything from daily play and sports to block parties and concerts. The design reflects the community’s values and supports both spontaneous play and intentional learning.

To ensure the signage would perform well in a highly active, outdoor community space, the project team selected iZone Imaging’s Custom High Pressure Laminate (CHPL) for fabrication. iZone’s CHPL was chosen for its ability to preserve rich, detailed graphics and withstand the wear and tear of daily public interaction. Its smooth, easy to clean surface makes it ideal for environments where children and families gather, and its long-lasting finish helps maintain appearance and legibility over time. This made it a perfect fit for a space designed to encourage play, learning, and frequent engagement.

We’re proud to contribute to a project that reimagines public space as a platform for connection, creativity, and lifelong learning. With continued support from the Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network (PLLAN), this initiative serves as a powerful model for how play can foster growth, inclusion, and community-wide engagement.
