Norman Hackerman Breezeway

The Norman Hackerman Building (NHB) is a central hub of scientific discovery at the University of Texas at Austin and one of several research-focused facilities within the College of Natural Sciences (CNS). Positioned along a major pedestrian corridor, the NHB breezeway serves as a prominent passage for daily foot traffic and UT campus tours, offering visitors a rare glimpse into active science laboratories where students and faculty conduct cutting-edge research.

To enhance this highly visible space, a series of new breezeway displays were installed to celebrate creativity, scholarship, and the intersection of science and art within the university community. The displays feature artwork contributed by UT students and faculty, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of CNS while showcasing the diverse talents present across campus.

Given the outdoor exposure of the breezeway and the high volume of visitors passing through daily, durability and visual quality were critical considerations for the project. iZone Imaging was selected to fabricate the displays using high-pressure laminate (HPL), a material well-suited for exterior and semi-exterior environments. The HPL panels were chosen for their exceptional durability, resistance to weather and temperature fluctuations, and their ability to maintain a beautiful, professional finish over time. The result is a display system that is both resilient and visually refined—capable of standing up to the Texas climate while preserving the integrity of the artwork.

The completed installation seamlessly integrates with the architectural character of the Norman Hackerman Building, enhancing the breezeway experience for students, faculty, and visitors alike. As campus tours move through the space, guests can engage with both the scientific work happening inside the labs and the creative expressions showcased just outside offering a multidimensional view of life within the College of Natural Sciences.
