Case Study | Los Flores Ranch Park

Thanks to the generous support of the Santa Barbara Foundation’s Conservation, Environment, and Public Trails grant, the City of Santa Maria has successfully installed four bilingual interpretive trailhead signs at Los Flores Ranch Park. These signs are designed to enrich the visitor experience and promote environmental education throughout the park’s 1,700 acres of scenic oak woodlands, grasslands, and rolling hills.

Located at 6271 Dominion Road, Los Flores Ranch Park offers more than 18 miles of multi-use trails. While already a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts, community feedback revealed a strong desire for improved trail information and educational resources. In response, the new signs provide:

  • Detailed illustrations and descriptions of native plants and wildlife
  • Comprehensive trail maps with key landmarks, rest areas, and scenic viewpoints
  • Trail difficulty indicators to help visitors select routes that suit their abilities
  • Bilingual content in English and Spanish, making the information inclusive and accessible

Framed in rustic-style artwork and placed at key trail locations, each sign is designed to both inform and inspire. The messaging encourages environmental stewardship while supporting safe and enjoyable exploration.

This project was made possible through the collaboration of skilled local professionals and partners. iZone Imaging provided the high-quality, high-pressure laminate (HPL) signs—engineered for durability and vibrant design, capable of withstanding the elements while maintaining long-term visual appeal.

Frankie Acuna of 805 Metal Works LLC co-designed and fabricated the signs in partnership with the City of Santa Maria. His craftsmanship ensured each display was functional, aesthetically pleasing, and harmonized with the natural landscape. Brickey Engineering handled installation, ensuring each sign was securely and precisely placed while minimizing impact on the environment.

The response from park visitors has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have expressed appreciation for the educational value and bilingual accessibility of the content, as well as the improved navigation the detailed trail maps provide. Hikers of all ages and experience levels are now better equipped to explore the park safely and confidently.

We are deeply grateful to our partners, including iZone Imaging, and the Santa Barbara Foundation for helping bring this vision to life. These new interpretive signs mark a significant step forward in enhancing both recreation and environmental education at Los Flores Ranch Park—fostering a deeper connection between our community and the land we share.
