Case Study | Lansing Trailhead, Blazers & Breadcrumbs

Situated on a bluff 450 feet above the town of Lansing Iowa, Mount Hosmer park offers spectacular panoramic views of the beautiful Mississippi River valley. It is named for Harriet Hosmer, a sculptress, who won a footrace to the summit of the hill during a steamboat layover in the 1850s. Visitors to the park enjoy bird watching, hiking trails and learning about the history of the surrounding area.

In partnership with the City of Lansing and the Lansing Park & Recreation Department, Northeast lowa RC&D was contracted to help improve the safety, accessibility, and health benefits of Lansing’s most visited park. Project deliverables included developing a wayfinding signage master plan to establish LPS (Lansing Parks System) brand design standards and designing and fabricating three trailhead kiosks to welcome visitors and provide them with essential information for their safety and enjoyment of the LPS. Northeast lowa RC&D utilized iZone’s Custom High Pressure Laminate and installation solutions to fabricate trailhead information signs, blazers & breadcrumbs. Today, Mount Hosmer park can be safely and interactively enjoyed by all visitors.

Special thank you to the Leadership Team, who met quarterly to provide input on project deliverables. The leadership team included staff and/or volunteers associated with the city of Lansing. In addition, thank you to the The Wellmark Foundation 2021 small MATCH Grant for providing the funding that made this project possible.
