Havenwoods State Forest

The Havenwoods State Forest Interpretive Signage Project was developed to deepen visitor understanding of the forest’s rich and varied past. Spanning 237 acres in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Havenwoods has experienced numerous land uses—from agriculture to military operations—before its restoration as an urban forest. To bring these lesser-known histories to light, a series of eight interpretive signs were installed throughout the property, offering visitors engaging stories tied directly to the locations they explore.

Designed in-house, the signage series reflects a collaborative, community-driven effort. Multiple partners contributed photography, historical content, and grant support, ensuring the signs were both visually compelling and historically accurate. To meet the environmental demands of an outdoor forest setting, the project team selected iZone Imaging’s Custom High-Pressure Laminate (CHPL) for sign production. This material provided exceptional durability and thermal stability—key factors for withstanding Wisconsin’s seasonal extremes. The CHPL panels also carry a ten‑year warranty, ensuring long-term performance with minimal maintenance and protecting the project’s educational value for years to come.

The installation of the signage was timed to coincide with two major milestones: the 45th anniversary of Havenwoods State Forest and the 50th anniversary of the Friends of Havenwoods. During the celebration, staff, volunteers, and visitors representing multiple decades of involvement gathered to experience the signs firsthand. The new interpretive elements sparked conversations about the forest’s evolution, restoration efforts, and the community stewardship that has shaped the site over time.

By blending thoughtful design, durable materials, and meaningful storytelling, the Havenwoods signage project honors the forest’s past while strengthening its role as an accessible and educational urban natural resource.
