Case Study | Echoes of the Grove: The Black Willow Experience

The Black Willow Nature Experience at Wasatch Mountain State Park (WMSP) is a thoughtful, immersive project that honors both the natural environment and cultural history. Titled Echoes of the Grove, the project drew inspiration from the legacy of towering, century-old black willow trees that once defined the landscape. When these trees reached the end of their lifespan and needed to be removed for public safety, the project team saw an opportunity to preserve their story in a meaningful, enduring way.

Rather than letting the trees be lost entirely, the salvaged timber was repurposed to create a unique interpretive campground experience. Today, visitors can engage with the site in a deeper way: both physically, through the crafted environment, and emotionally, by connecting to the history embedded in the materials around them. The project transforms what could have been a loss into a living narrative that celebrates resilience, stewardship, and the evolving relationship between people and place.

A strong partnership between several key contributors made the Black Willow Nature Experience possible. Wasatch Mountain State Park, part of Utah State Parks, served as the project’s end user and steward. Fabrication was led by iZone Imaging, whose durable high pressure laminate (HPL) panels play a leading role in the interpretive experience, delivering storytelling elements that are both visually compelling and built to withstand the outdoor environment.

At its core, the project reflects a deep commitment to community collaboration. The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation provided essential grant funding, helping bring the vision to life. A passionate and dedicated team drove the effort including project creators Stacey Heverling and Kelley Ingols, whose vision guided the concept from inception. They were joined by WMSP Naturalist Kathy Donnell, Building and Grounds Supervisor Tom Halladay, and project designer Monica Stamm, whose collective expertise and years of dedication shaped the project into what it is today.

Together, this team created more than a campground—they developed an experience that invites visitors to reflect, explore, and connect. Echoes of the Grove is a powerful example of how thoughtful design and collaboration can transform natural change into something both meaningful and lasting.
