Case Study |
The City of Fife has officially unveiled the Colburn Park Splash Pad, a dynamic new community space that has transformed an underutilized area next to the Fife Aquatic Center into a lively and inclusive hub for families. Designed to address the city’s growing need for safe, accessible outdoor recreation, the splash pad provides children and families of all ages and abilities a place to gather, play, and cool off during the summer months.
Before its revitalization, the Colburn Park site remained largely overlooked, despite its prime location beside the Aquatic Center. Today, it stands as a model of thoughtful urban design and community investment, with interactive water features, shaded seating areas, and open gathering spaces that encourage both active play and social connection. The project’s focus on accessibility ensures that children of varying abilities can participate, making it a true community asset.
Adding a creative dimension to the project, the splash pad incorporates public art through Curious Minds, a whimsical mural by local artist and registered nurse Laura Quann. Inspired by the marine life of Puget Sound, the mural adorns the rear of the new restroom and mechanical building. Quann’s goal was to spark curiosity and imagination in children, enhancing the joyful, community-centered environment. The mural was officially unveiled at the splash pad’s grand opening on July 3, further underscoring the project’s role as a cultural as well as recreational space.
The project’s success reflects the dedication and expertise of a broad coalition of partners. The City of Fife Parks and Recreation Department, community stakeholders, and local contractors worked together to bring the vision to life, transforming the space into a community cornerstone. To enhance the visitor experience, iZone Imaging contributed durable custom high pressure laminate (CHPL) panels for the interpretive and educational signage, ensuring both long-lasting quality and visual appeal.
The Colburn Park Splash Pad now serves as a welcoming destination where families can connect, children can play freely, and imagination can flourish—an inspiring example of how public spaces can enrich everyday community life.
