Case Study | Boulder County Recycling Center

The Boulder County Recycling Center has long been a cornerstone of the region’s commitment to environmental stewardship, but its recent interpretive visitor center elevates that mission to an entirely new level. Designed by Studio Tectonic, the new space invites the public to explore the complex and often unseen processes behind recycling, conservation, and responsible resource management. Through engaging exhibits, thoughtful storytelling, and durable, purpose-built materials, the visitor center transforms a traditionally industrial environment into an accessible and inspiring learning destination.

Studio Tectonic, serving as the project’s prime contractor, was awarded the commission to design an interpretive experience that would demystify recycling operations while fostering a deeper appreciation for sustainable practices. Their approach blends clarity, creativity, and functionality, making the center both educational and welcoming. Each interpretive element is crafted to help visitors—students, families, and community members alike—better understand how everyday decisions about waste impact the broader environment.

To bring this vision to life, Studio Tectonic partnered with Condit Exhibits, the project’s fabrication subcontractor. Condit translated Studio Tectonics' conceptual and visual designs into durable, high-quality physical components capable of withstanding the unique demands of the space. Because the exhibits occupy an environment that combines indoor and semi‑outdoor conditions, material selection was a critical aspect of the design process. iZone Imaging’s Custom High Pressure Laminate (CHPL) was chosen as the primary material for the interpretive panels and display elements. Its exceptional durability, cleanability, and resistance to moisture made it ideal for a facility where staff must frequently maintain and sanitize surfaces. CHPL’s thermal stability and moisture-impervious properties ensure the exhibits retain their appearance and structural integrity despite variable temperatures and exposure conditions inherent to a recycling center.

The resulting visitor center is both robust and refined—an educational environment capable of withstanding the realities of an industrial site while maintaining the aesthetic and interpretive quality expected of a public-facing institution. Through thoughtful design and strong collaboration, Studio Tectonic and its partners have created a space that amplifies Boulder County’s commitment to sustainability and empowers the community to better understand the lifecycle of the materials they use every day.
