Case Study | Bellevue House National Historic Site

The Bellevue House National Historic Site in Kingston, Ontario, has long been a significant landmark, offering a glimpse into the life of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister. Following an extensive renewal, Bellevue House now invites visitors to engage with a more inclusive narrative, enriching their understanding of the complex history surrounding one of Canada's most prominent figures.

The revitalization of Bellevue House encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of its exhibits and programming, designed to present a broader and more nuanced perspective on Sir John A. Macdonald's legacy. This renewed approach aims to foster a deeper dialogue about Canada's past, acknowledging the diverse stories that contribute to the nation's history. A critical aspect of enhancing the visitor experience is the implementation of robust and informative exterior signage. Given Kingston's harsh winters, the durability of these signs was paramount. Custom High-Pressure Laminate (CHPL) was selected, for its exceptional ability to withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

iZone Imaging provided the CHPL product, ensuring that the signs remain vibrant and legible throughout the year. These signs serve a dual purpose: they offer wayfinding information to help visitors navigate the historic site and provide interpretive details along the orchard pathway and gardens, enriching the visitor experience with historical insights.

The successful transformation of Bellevue House is the result of a collaborative effort between Parks Canada, Origin Studios, and iZone Imaging. Origin Studios played a pivotal role in reimagining the site's exhibits and interpretive design, creating an engaging and educational environment for visitors. Meanwhile, Parks Canada ensured that the renewal project aligned with its commitment to preserving and sharing Canada's heritage.

With its updated exhibits and durable signage, Bellevue House National Historic Site offers a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into Canada's history. The orchard pathway and gardens provide a scenic backdrop for reflection and learning, while the house itself stands as a testament to the evolving narrative of the nation's past. The site's renewal ensures that it remains a dynamic and inclusive space for historical discovery, preserving its legacy for future generations.

Special thanks to iZone Imaging for their high-quality CHPL signage, Parks Canada for their stewardship, and Origin Studios for their innovative design, all of which have contributed to making Bellevue House a premier destination for historical exploration.
