Case Study | Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Visitor Center

The Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association (ABDNHA) proudly announces the completion of its new Visitor Plaza and Garden Entrance exhibit. This exciting addition transforms the outdoor space surrounding the ABDNHA building into a dynamic and educational environment, enhancing the experience for visitors and fostering a deeper connection with the unique desert landscape.

The project was born from a desire to maximize the utility of the outdoor space around the ABDNHA building. Recognizing the potential to create an inviting area for learning and exploration, the team embarked on developing a Visitor Information Plaza. This space is designed to inform guests about the many activities and natural wonders they can explore in the surrounding Anza-Borrego Desert region. Both components of this ambitious project—the Visitor Plaza and the Garden Entrance—were developed in-house, showcasing the dedication and expertise of the ABDNHA team. Funding for the garden portion was generously provided by the state and county, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting local educational initiatives.

A key feature of the new exhibit is its emphasis on the desert's unique aquifer system, with valuable insights contributed by John Peterson, a dedicated member of ABDNHA. The exhibit offers visitors a comprehensive understanding of the region's water resources, highlighting the delicate balance of the desert ecosystem.

The project incorporates Custom High-Pressure Laminate (CHPL) signage, supplied by iZone Imaging. Known for its durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures, CHPL was the ideal choice for the outdoor environment of the Anza-Borrego Desert. The signage provides clear, informative content that enhances visitor navigation and understanding of the area's natural and cultural significance.

Mike McElhatton, the Educational Programs Director and exhibit designer, played a pivotal role in bringing the vision to life. His innovative approach ensures that the exhibit is not only educational but also engaging, inviting visitors to explore and learn more about the desert's unique features.

This project is a testament to the collaborative spirit and dedication of the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association, state and county supporters, and the local community. It stands as a valuable resource for both residents and tourists, enriching their experience of the desert and promoting environmental stewardship.
